What’s new in TMS 2021?

It’s been an exciting year with TMS, a few silver linings to an otherwise horrible 2020. Theta burst treatment which we’ve provided for the past 2 years was FDA cleared for the treatment of major depression and can shorten the treatment sessions. When we first started, the Neurostar device was approved and configured to deliver treatment in 37 minutes. Then it got shortened to 19 minutes. The same treatment can now be done in a little over 3 minutes with intermittent theta burst but some insurance companies have yet to authorize payment for it. We use combinations of treatment, typically adding right-sided continuous theta burst stimulation for about 40 seconds and bright-light phototherapy we provide for no extra charge! The MagVenture device we’ve used the last 3 years has a much more comfortable cooled coil. In 2020 the Brainsway and MagVenture TMS devices got FDA clearance for OCD treatment. The Clinical TMS Society (of which Dr. Cook is a member of the insurance committee) has been petitioning the insurance companies to pay for it but they haven’t yet. Our clinic doesn’t offer the treatment for OCD yet due to the expense of purchasing a new $12,000 coil and lack of insurance coverage.
